~Horror movie watchlist~

Hi doll! The time has finally come, it's spooky month!!! I love, love, love Halloween! And a little fact about me is that I am a sucker for horror movies, though it's mostly thriller that I like.

But either way, watching scary movies while eating a tooth-rotting amount of candy is how I'd like to spend my Halloween this year :)

I'll watch any horror flick - from slasher classics to psychological thrillers to B-grade horrors, you name it! I can stomach the most gut-wrenching gore and body horror you can think of, so really I have no limit. BUT that won't stop me from shitting on these movies and poking fun at them, unless they're like really good (pretty rare thing for me to say).

If you were to ask me what type of horror I like, I'd say psychological horrors, in a heartbeat! I believe the mind can be a more unsettling horror than your typical monsters and killers. The kind of movies that can mess with your perception of reality, make you second-guess yourself, keep you on the edge of your seat are the best kinds of horror! They don't have to rely on shocking gore or cheap jumpscares to make you piss your pants. They really make you analyse everything, to try to piece the puzzle pieces together before the characters do while building a fear that develops slowly.

Don't get me wrong though, I do enjoy a good slasher! Yes I know, they can be repetitive and predictable and full of cliches. Yet, they're still fun to watch, in my humble opinion, especially with friends. Most of the fun is guessing who’s going to survive and who’s going to meet a gruesome fate >:) And if the movie is well-made, I'll end up rooting for the characters, no matter how much I talk crap about the movie.

However, I can't stand monsters and supernatural stuff. I just think they're too unrealistic. And YES I know, it's a movie, of course it's gonna be unrealistic. Call me boring but I just find them too silly to take seriously and watch, like I'll roll my eyes every scene if I had to sit through one. I prefer stuff that's more grounded, stuff that's more likely to scare me because there's an (extremely small) possibility it can happen in real life, y'know? Maybe that's why I hate anything Sci-Fi. But I'm willing to give it a try.

Sooo I wanted to share you all my current watchlist for this month! I doubt I can finish them but it's worth a shot!

Soft & Quiet (2022)

A group of seemingly normal women gather for what looks like a casual neighborhood meeting. As the conversation unfolds, it becomes clear that they share violent, racist ideologies - and the evening spirals into shocking, escalating brutality.

As a person of colour, I'm both worried and intrigued at the same time. I picked this movie because I've heard people say they felt physically sick after watching this. Human cruelty scares me.

Midsommar (2019)

A grieving young woman, Dani, joins her boyfriend and his friends on a trip to a remote Swedish commune for their midsummer festival. What starts as a cultural retreat slowly morphs into a daylight nightmare of ritualistic horror.

I've heard people rave about this movie online yet surprisingly, I never watched it. It's one of those "everything is not as it seems" movies. It's supposedly bright and cheerful on the surface but deeply disturbing as you continue, sounds like it's right up my alley!

Halloween (1978)

When Michael Myers was only 6 years old, he murdered his teenage sister and was locked away for 15 years. On Halloween night, he escapes from a mental institution and returns to his hometown to stalk babysitters, as a masked killer.

The so-called, "Grandfather of slashers". I can't agree or disagree since I haven't watched it yet, however it's highly regarded as a classic and paved the way for the genre. Though I can't help but wonder if nostalgia clouds people's judgment on this movie.

Hereditary (2018)

The movie follows a family grieving the death of their matriarch. After her passing, her daughter, Annie and granddaughter began to unravel the mysteries of their cryptic ancestry. The deeper Annie delves into her family history, the more she uncovers a horrifying legacy of trauma, manipulation, and occult influence.

A friend recommended this movie to me some time ago and it's been on my list for a while now. I was disappointed to hear it had supernatural elements in it, but he swore it was a good watch. He told me it was a slow burn so I'll let you know if it's worth it.

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

FBI trainee Clarice Starling is tasked with interviewing a psychopathic serial killer and former psychiatrist, Dr. Hannibal Lecter to help catch another serial killer known as "Buffalo Bill." What follows is a chilling psychological chess game between hunter and hunted.

Another cult classic, at least from what I've heard. To the point where it's regarded as one of the best movies, even outside of the horror genre. But we'll see.

That's it for my list. Hopefully I'll be able to finish these movies in time before November. Thank you for reading!
